Coronavirus Lockdown

Coronavirus Lockdown

During the Coronavirus lockdown, I tried to keep myself as busy as possible to pass the time. Luckily my parents’ back garden needed some work doing which kept me busy for the majority of lockdown. Lugging sleepers and shoveling top soil does get boring after a while, but it kept me busy. Other than working in the garden I tried to keep myself in a physically fit state as it was very tempting to eat all the time when at home. I went on numerous runs to keep fit and healthy. It was important for me to get in shape as I had so much free time. Now that lockdown restrictions have been eased, golf has started up again which is a dream come true, numerous rounds are to come within the coming weeks for sure.

Back to Work After Lockdown

After a long winded lockdown we are finally back up and running wooohooo!!! Special measures and procedures have been put in place to help protect our clients and the staff at Wallers. The Wallers carefully planned the return to work by phasing workers back gradually. On our return, Steve could see how the measures put in place were working and add to them if necessary.

Government COVID19 Guidelines

Steve Waller was continuously updating each and every one of us so that we all knew what the plan was going to be. Hand sanitiser and Perspex screens have been installed to each desk in all of the offices to help minimalise risk and keep us safe. We are following the government’s Covid-19, 5 steps to working safely guidelines which can be seen on their website by clicking on the following link https://www.gov.uk/guidance/working-safely-during-coronavirus-covid-19/5-steps-to-working-safely

Safe Company Communicate Via Social Media Group Chats

All employees are able to keep in contact and communicate with each other through the Workplace group chat. We can show everyone what we have all been doing and upload our latest site photographs.

Working on Site

Projects that could start, nearing the end of lockdown, were looked at carefully to see who could come back to work and run them. Supply chains were also essential as many of our suppliers were just starting to return too. Obviously, it is crucial that materials are available. We are still ensuring that guidelines are followed outside the office too. Social distancing is still important and we no longer travel in vans together. On site we have to make plans to ensure that workmen are not working in the same close vicinity at the same time. The return to work phase has been extremely well planned and completed at the right time. The majority of employees are now back to work and in a very safe, clean and tidy office.

We are getting back to some kind of normality after a very bizarre period which is good for the country. I hope everyone stays safe during these strange and difficult times.

Flexible Tap Connectors - Can They Be Used?

Flexible Tap Connectors – Can They Be Used?

We were recently approached by a school to provide a price to replace all the existing flexible tap connectors fitted to the school’s sinks and wash hand basins. They requested a hard plumbed copper connection due to the possible bacteria growth within the hose connector. This request was prompted by information the school received from the local authority which oversee the buildings in the area.

This got me thinking. Why are items that are commonly used needing to be replaced and is there an alternative?

A Grey Area

After doing a little bit more investigation, it seems that this area is a little bit grey at times. The HSE’s website says, ‘materials which encourage growth of Legionella (e.g. flexible hoses) should be avoided wherever possible‘ but doesn’t say cannot be used. The Water Regulation Advisory Scheme (WRAS) published a document in 2011 related to this issue. They have confirmed that some rubber hoses along with certain O-rings do have the risk of bacteria growth. This is due to the rubber that is used and the manufacturing process in which they are produced. However, if the correct hygiene is followed the risks are reduced. WRAS also state that they do test and check some manufacturer’s products and issue approval numbers to them if they are compliant with current regulations. Therefore, a WRAS approved flexible tap connector can be safely used if hard plumbing is difficult or unachievable.

Is There an Alternative to Rubber?

Is there is an alternative to a rubber flexible tap connector which still provides the movability that the flexible option gives? The simple answer is yes. A copper version is available but does have some limitations. They take longer to connect due to the additional connectors required and the flexibility is more limited compared to the rubber option.

Conclusion

The bottom line is, it’s down to the view of the end user and the instructions from the local authority on the standard they want all of their buildings to follow. Personally, if a flexible connector has WRAS approval a replacement seems to be false economy unless the hose is faulty. Moving forward and if required, then the flexible hose could be phased out within the commercial sector in years to come. However, I can see them being around a lot longer within the domestic market due to ease of use and speed of installation.

My Coronavirus Lockdown Experience

My Coronavirus Lockdown Experience

Once lockdown was announced by the prime minister, it felt slightly surreal that we had to stay at home and going to work was no longer available. There was a feeling of uncertainty, how long would this last? How would companies survive? This is my Coronavirus lockdown experience.

Furloughed

Luckily the government had put the furlough process into place. This meant that although we had to stay at home, the government would pay 80% of our wages. Managing director, Steve Waller, acted extremely quickly to the announcement and ensured that we were on the furlough scheme immediately which protected the company and employees jobs. This was important because we wouldn’t be able to source materials or work on sites meaning no work for the company.

What I did to Keep Myself Entertained During Lockdown

It took a while to get my head around the whole situation. It was very strange seeing little to no cars or people outside going about their normal day to day business. Seeing others wearing face masks and gloves whilst doing the food shop was also something I never thought I would see. It was like something out of a film. I haven’t missed the fast food places that I thought I would which is a surprise. During the lockdown I managed to catch up with all of the T.V. series’ that I was currently watching as well as the films I wanted to see. Gaming was also something I could do a lot of with so much more time available than before.

Even though I couldn’t do much during the full lockdown, staying home to keep the NHS and everyone else safe was the top priority. It felt like a small sacrifice compared to what nurses and doctors were doing.

Back to Work

Eight weeks later and we are back to work whilst implementing the government’s COVID-19 guidelines to help keep clients and staff safe. Hopefully life will get back to normal soon!

Staying COVID-19 Secure 2020

Staying COVID-19 Secure 2020

As we get back to work after such unprecedented times, we all need to work in a safe manner. After being furloughed, staff across the country are returning to the workplace. At Waller Associates we are following the government’s Staying COVID-19 Secure 2020.

Five Steps to Safer Working Together

The government have outlined 5 steps of working together. Waller Associates ensured that the following were put into place before any staff member returned to work.

  • We have carried out a COVID-19 Risk Assessment and shared the results with the people who work here
  • We have cleaning, handwashing and hygiene procedures in line with guidance
  • We have taken all reasonable steps to help people work from home
  • We have taken all reasonable steps to maintain a 2m distance in the workplace
  • Where people cannot be 2m apart, we have done everything practical to manage transmission risk

All of our staff are asked that they wash their hands when they arrive at work. Each desk has a hand sanitizer station and a Perspex screen similar to the screens used at supermarket checkouts. Workstations are at least 2m apart and, if possible, staff are able to work from home.

With these steps we are helping to minamalise the risk of infection and stop the spread of coronavirus. We aim to protect our staff and clients during such times and look forward to a time when we can go back to some sort of normality.
