Historic Building Internal Refurbishment
We undertook this historic building internal refurbishment project at Turkey Mill, located on the edge of Maidstone. The mill was once the largest paper mill in the country. Established in 1740, the mill produced fine quality paper for over 200 years. Turkey Mill is now a popular business park with a variety of buildings having been converted, adapted and extended over the past 25+ years by the current owners. It is now a base to about 70 different businesses.
The Project
Waller Building and Glazing were appointed by the owners to undertake an internal refurbishment and upgrades to the “Drying Loft” at Turkey Court. The suite comprised circa 2,500 sq.ft of ground floor office space with an additional mezzanine area and WC’s.
Unusually for the Estate, this particular office had remained vacant for a while after the previous occupier relocated. The Estate owners were initially undecided about how best to update and adapt the suite, particularly the mezzanine area in order to secure a letting to a new occupier. The plan nevertheless evolved and specification became clear once the established neighbouring tenant confirmed their interest to expand into this suite.
The Works
Work began in the autumn of 2024 to enlarge the windows on the mezzanine to maximise light. In addition providing the new tenant with lovely views from this level over the river Len and award-winning landscaped grounds & walled garden. Over the next few weeks, the whole suite had a full redecoration, upgraded LED lighting, a white handle less kitchen installed to the mezzanine and high quality new dark grey carpeting throughout.
New Tenants
The new business occupiers moved in immediately upon completion of the works & have now settled in nicely and are effectively utilising the newly refurbished space for their growing business.
Waller Building and Glazing – Heritage Works
As part of the works carried out by Waller Building and Glazing Services we have experience in working with historical buildings. Very interesting information from the staff at Turkey Mill provided an insight to the importance of the Mill and the surrounding area. This historic building once played a key role in the production of quality “wove” paper used by artists such as Constable, Picasso, Gainsborough and J M W Turner as well as by Queen Victoria, Napoleon, Wellington, and Washington. Paper from the Turkey Mill was also used to sign the Peace Treaty with Japan at the close of World War Two.
