New School Steps – Maidstone Girls’ Grammar School

At Maidstone Girls’ Grammar School, a main access route consisted of a set of steps that were uneven, poorly spaced, and presented several trip hazards requiring urgent attention. In addition, the existing external lift providing wheelchair access was no longer operational.

To bring the access route up to current standards, we completely removed the existing steps and the faulty lift. New tactile paving and compliant handrails were installed to ensure safe and comfortable access for all students.

To further enhance accessibility, a new ramp is proposed for installation next year, to be positioned on the adjoining grass area. This will provide improved wheelchair access and ensure the school remains inclusive and fully compliant.

Building Regulations

Under the Building Regulations, Approved Document M, there are specific requirements relating to the accessibility of buildings. Compliance is a legal obligation, particularly in commercial buildings and educational facilities.
