School Decking Installation

King Ethelbert School, based in Birchington near Margate, Kent asked us to carry out this school decking installation project. The area where the decking required replacing was a floating roof on the first floor of the school’s art block.

The original wooden decking and timber joists had started to deteriorate and could have become a safety issue in time.

Decking Pedestals

The old decking and joists were completely removed to reveal the original decking pedestals which were in a poor condition. Were were not originally instructed to replace the pedestals, but after discussing the problem with the school they gave us the go ahead to replace the pedestals. They are an important component that raises decking materials off of the ground to improve drainage and ventilation. This helps to prevent dampness and extend the life of the deck.

Composite Decking

A total of 400 square metres of decking was required for the installation which included walkways and a large open balcony area of the art block. We installed the composite anti-slip, weather resistant and anti-stain decking and aluminium joists during the school term. We managed to achieve this by working closely with the school, providing a detailed works schedule which enabled them to close off the areas, where we were working, to students with the least amount of disruption possible.

The products used come with a 10 year warranty and due to the improved materials, the decking should last the school for many years.
