Working Safely With Care Homes

Working Safely With Care Homes

In recent months we have been working safely with care homes. We provide and carry out many building and glazing services for the sector and are currently working with a care home in Woolwich. Due to the current climate, it is vital that our operatives follow all Covid-19 guidelines and procedures correctly. This is even more important when working around people with disabilities and health issues.

Daily Covid-19 Testing

Currently, when working in carehomes, all of our staff take a Covid-19 test daily and wait for a negative result before entering the building. These tests help protect all care home staff and residents by eliminating the chances of the virus getting into the property. Additionally, facemasks are worn at all times when on site and frequent hand washing is performed. The health of all of our clients is extremely important, especially if they have any underlying conditions. With the correct protocol being implemented this reduces the chances of any transmission of the virus that could lead to dangerous complications. Many of the care home residents are high risk when it comes to coronavirus which means that it is very important that the rules are followed meticulously.

Office Staff Testing

As well as on site testing, the office staff at Wallers are having frequent covid tests to keep everyone safe. 1 in 3 people that have Covid-19 do not display any symptoms and could be unknowingly spreading the virus. In our offices, we still have screens and hand sanitiser stations on each desk. We were recently visited by a Health and Safety Executive inspector at our offices to make sure we were Covid-19 compliant. I’m please to say that we passed and the inspector was impressed with the measures that have been put in place at Waller HQ.

On behalf of everyone here at Wallers, we would like to thank all of the NHS workers for the heroic work that they are putting in 24/7 to help save lives and keep people safe.

Stay Safe

Kent and Medway Healthy Business Awards

Kent and Medway Healthy Business Awards

Hi Everyone

It’s been a while since my last blog. I hope everyone had a good Christmas and new year even though we were mainly stuck indoors due to lockdown. Now we have all settled back into work it feels like a fresh start.

Waller Associates has signed up for the Kent and Medway Healthy Business Awards. The Healthy Workplace programme helps businesses of all sizes become healthier places to work. The programme is funded by Kent County Council and Medway Council and is managed and delivered across all of Kent. The programme promotes a positive lifestyle in the workplace including healthy life style, diet and good mental health.

The Company Awards

There are four award levels Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. For more details please click on the following link to the Medway Council website https://www.medway.gov.uk/healthyworkplace

I think that this is an excellent idea especially now that Christmas has been and gone, and boy did I have a good Christmas!

I understand the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle and I’ve always loved playing sport. Additionally, I have been paying more attention to my diet. Since the start of the year I have been watching what food I eat and have been eating a lot less than I was last year. I have also been out running every other day to keep fit which is tough because of the dark, wet evenings. I’m definitely not enjoying cold wet hands and the red nose but I know it’s good for me and it’s keeping me in shape. I can’t wait for the lighter evenings to return! Hopefully, I am doing my bit to help us push towards the Kent and Medway Health business gold or platinum award!

Healthy Eating

Eating healthily is equally important as exercise. Cutting out snacks and fatty foods from your diet will help you to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle

It is very easy to get trapped indoors and eating chocolate, sweets and sugary snacks whilst watching Netflix especially in these strange times. I can speak from experience let me tell you. If you can motivate yourself to go for a walk, run, cycle or do any form of exercise – DO IT! You will feel so much better in yourself.

I hope everyone stays safe, eats healthier and gets exercising!

Cheers, Rees

Housing Association Project Management

Housing Association Project Management

Here at Waller Associates, Sam and I are currently running a contract with housing association Optivo. Housing association project management is a new area for me. The contract is to carry out minor works and maintenance in hundreds of properties across Swale and Medway. Both of us have quickly learned how to manage and run this contract. It is very important to ensure that the works proceed smoothly for our client. To aid us, we have created a spreadsheet which keeps track of the jobs we need to book in and complete. This is essential as we receive many phone calls and emails on a daily basis from the housing association and their residents.

Sam’s Role

Sam and I work as team and have taken on different roles to fulfil the aspects required for the works to run successfully. Sam runs the office based administration side of things, contacting the residents and booking in appointments for our contractors to carry out the works. He also deals with the emails that go back and forth from the client and ourselves. All orders from Optivo go directly to Sam and he then organises our files and updates the spreadsheet accordingly.

My Role

My role is in the field and I am out and about making sure that the works are running smoothly and on time. The main objectives are to make sure materials are ordered on time and that we have the right amount of labour to carry out the works. Both aspects need to be organised on time to allow the works to go ahead on a tight schedule. I attend site meetings, deliver materials and meet our guys to run through the jobs to help make things run smoothly. Additionally, I print out, organise and put together worker packs so that we can get signatures and feedback from the residents. Feedback is very important for us and indiactes how the works are proceeding and the level of service we are providing. We make a list of all feedback whether it is good or bad and react appropriately.

Testing Times – Covid-19

I really like dealing with the residents and meet a range of different and interesting people. It has obviously been a testing time in 2020 with two lockdowns. Our main concern is to keep our clients and staff safe during this worldwide pandemic whilst providing a professional service. Before carrying out the works, we check with residents that nobody in the household has any coronavirus symptoms. If they are showing any of the symptoms we have to cancel the appointment and rearrange it for a later date. The Swale area has recently had the highest infection rate in England and we have had to cancel some appointments due to residents having to self-isolate. When we are working at someone’s home we have instructed the residents not to go near our guys and visa versa.

This has been difficult because some of the residents do like to look after our workforce with cups of tea and cake. However the social distancing has worked as none of our workforce has displayed any symptoms to date. Despite the current situation we have managed to keep on top of things and keep to the tight schedule.

Overall Sam and I get along really well and we work together superbly which is essential to keep the contract running efficiently. #dreamteam

Working During Covid-19 Pandemic

Working During Covid-19 Pandemic

The majority of the team are back to work here at Wallers. We are all being very careful and taking maximum precautions to help minimise the risk to clients and other members of the team. Social distancing is being enforced wherever it is practically possible to ensure we can carry on working during Covid-19 pandemic.

Safety Measures in Place

Our offices are a very different place to work in comparison to before the outbreak. Many safety measures have been implemented. Face masks have been supplied to all Waller employees to keep themselves and others safe. In the offices, large protective screens are on every desk to help protect each other and keep everyone apart. There is a hand sanitiser station at the entrance to the building. In addition to this, every desk has a large bottle of hand sanitiser which we are encouraged to use regularly.

The majority of doors and windows are being left open throughout the day to help ventilate the office and minimise any risk.

Away From the Office

As well as hand sanitiser in the office, each member of staff have a bottle for their company vehicles. Travelling to site with others in the same vehicle is being kept to an absolute minimum. This can only take place in the larger vehicles. There must be an empty seat inbetween each person which allows a safe distance. Additionally, the windows must be left open to ensure optimum ventilation. In the majority of cases staff travel to site in their own separate vehicles.

On Site

Obviously, we have to attend sites for progress visits and to attend meetings. Visits are being kept to a minimum to help reduce the chances of spreading or catching the virus. Workers are being provided with face masks and hand sanitiser for them to use at their own will. Signs are being put up to help remind everyone about the rules and guidelines that have to be followed on and off site.

Working Safely in Schools

Arriving at schools is a very strange experience at the moment. Temperatures are being taken, masks are being handed out and hand sanitiser stations are dotted around everywhere. As visitors, we have to follow the schools rules and procedures to ensure we keep the staff and students safe. Any deliveries of materials have to be dropped off and unloaded at times when children are not in the area. We have to ensure that a clear path to the working area is available.

Schools are Very Different Places at the Moment

One of the things that has made an impact on me the most is how differently schools are having to functioning at the moment. Clear, two meter markings have been applied to corridor floors and across playgrounds to help the students maintain social distancing. Desks are laid out in an exam style to make sure that there is enough space between students. Staggered lunch and break times have been put in place to reduce large groups of childrenbeing near each other. One way systems have also been put in place around schools and everyone needs to follow and abide these measures.

What I do admire is how seriously the majority of people are taking this and lengths they are prepared change their daily routine in order to minimise risk to others.

Hopefully, the world will be back to normal soon, but until then stay safe and follow government guidelines

Coronavirus Lockdown

During the Coronavirus lockdown, I tried to keep myself as busy as possible to pass the time. Luckily my parents’ back garden needed some work doing which kept me busy for the majority of lockdown. Lugging sleepers and shoveling top soil does get boring after a while, but it kept me busy. Other than working in the garden I tried to keep myself in a physically fit state as it was very tempting to eat all the time when at home. I went on numerous runs to keep fit and healthy. It was important for me to get in shape as I had so much free time. Now that lockdown restrictions have been eased, golf has started up again which is a dream come true, numerous rounds are to come within the coming weeks for sure.

Back to Work After Lockdown

After a long winded lockdown we are finally back up and running wooohooo!!! Special measures and procedures have been put in place to help protect our clients and the staff at Wallers. The Wallers carefully planned the return to work by phasing workers back gradually. On our return, Steve could see how the measures put in place were working and add to them if necessary.

Government COVID19 Guidelines

Steve Waller was continuously updating each and every one of us so that we all knew what the plan was going to be. Hand sanitiser and Perspex screens have been installed to each desk in all of the offices to help minimalise risk and keep us safe. We are following the government’s Covid-19, 5 steps to working safely guidelines which can be seen on their website by clicking on the following link https://www.gov.uk/guidance/working-safely-during-coronavirus-covid-19/5-steps-to-working-safely

Safe Company Communicate Via Social Media Group Chats

All employees are able to keep in contact and communicate with each other through the Workplace group chat. We can show everyone what we have all been doing and upload our latest site photographs.

Working on Site

Projects that could start, nearing the end of lockdown, were looked at carefully to see who could come back to work and run them. Supply chains were also essential as many of our suppliers were just starting to return too. Obviously, it is crucial that materials are available. We are still ensuring that guidelines are followed outside the office too. Social distancing is still important and we no longer travel in vans together. On site we have to make plans to ensure that workmen are not working in the same close vicinity at the same time. The return to work phase has been extremely well planned and completed at the right time. The majority of employees are now back to work and in a very safe, clean and tidy office.

We are getting back to some kind of normality after a very bizarre period which is good for the country. I hope everyone stays safe during these strange and difficult times.

February Half Term Preparations

Christmas is over and 2020 has started quickly and the February half term preparations are already underway. With January coming to an end, half term is just around the corner. The school holiday may only be for a week, but that is long enough to get a lot of work done. All works have been booked in and materials are arriving at the office more and more each day. It is extremely important that we plan what jobs should be completed in the half term as we only have the week to finish the works. Numerous meetings and labour changes are currently being made to ensure we fit everything in. Not much longer to wait until the hard work really begins.

Christmas!

After a long busy year we are finally coming to the end of 2019 and soon it will be Christmas! With the festive season just around the corner spirits are growing within the team. Advent calendars are on the desks and the door opening has just begun, although Mark’s looks to have taken a battering already?

Christmas Company Doo

The Christmas Doo has finally been announced and we cannot wait for the big bash. As the year is coming to an end, the work is still continuing as normal. Multiple jobs are still underway and are on schedule to be completed before Christmas. We have had an extremely busy November and it looks as though December is going to be the same. Lots of planning for the coming year has already taken place. Jobs are being allocated and planned as we speak for January. It is vital that we keep looking forward and plan when work is going to be completed, otherwise it could be chaos. This will probably be my last blog for this year which is sad I know. However, you can look forward to my next blog which will be all about the doo…… if I can remember it!

I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy new year!

First Wallerversary

I cannot believe I have been at Wallers for a year and it’s my first Wallerversary!  The time has absolutely flown by. I can remember walking into the office on my first day where I was welcomed with open arms and became one of the team there and then. Even though I made a fair few teas, I was involved with everyone’s work, watching them every step of the way.

Over the year I have learnt so much to do with the industry and the way that the company runs. I have been shadowing all of the contract managers during my time at Wallers, learning how they approach jobs and certain situations.

I have been working closely with Andy throughout the summer. We had multiple jobs to manage over the past few months which I have been a part of from start to finish. It is important to take note of all of the different trades that are required. This will show the steps throughout for future jobs and I can use my experience. I feel as though I have come on leaps and bounds over the summer. I have needed to think about situations and manage issues myself, finding solutions. Also by visiting various working sites and seeing how things are done, I can now do a lot more independently. I do enjoy working alongside Andy assisting and learning along the way and I hope to continue working with him and to learn more each day. I look forward to the coming years and challenges we are going to face.

New Kid on the Block

There is a new kid on the block, Samuel Waller. I look forward to helping the new youngster in anyway I can, as will the rest of the Waller gang.

Completed Summer School Projects

This is my latest blog on the subject of our completed summer school projects. As I am sure all of you know, the summer holidays are over and the children are all back to school. In my previous blogs, I have mentioned that the summer holidays are the busiest time of year for us here at Wallers, especially this year. All of our summer holiday jobs have come to an end, but there is no time to stop. We are already looking at and booking in work for the October half term. Although the massive rush is over, there is still a lot of work in the pipe line.

My first Summer at Wallers

This has been my first summer holiday period at Wallers and it’s safe to say it has been a busy one. Jobs have been running all over the county in over 40 different school. Works have varied from maintenance works to toilet block refurbishments to full window installations. Now we are at the end of the holiday and the works have been completed we now need to look forward to the up and coming October half term. Additionally we are experienced at working during the school term working closely with the school to ensure as little disruption as possible.

We best get pricing!

Approaching Summer Works

Approaching Summer Works

Hi all, as we know the school holidays are just around the corner. I thought I’d give you an insight to our approaching summer works schedule. Schools accross the county have been planning projects and works which they would like to carried out over the summer. The school summer holidays are an extremely busy time for us here at Wallers. In fact it is our busiest time of the year as most schools request that projects be run whilst there are no children in attendence.

Experience of Working with Schools

Thanks to our experience in the education sector, we have started to plan ahead for the summer holidays already as we know it will be very busy. Labour has been allocated to ensure we are ready when the rush begins during July. Materials are being ordered and the deliveries are arriving on a daily basis. It’s hectic!!

My First Summer

This is my first summer here at Wallers and I’m not sure what to expect, I just know it’s going to be busy for sure. As long as we stay on top of our jobs and make sure any problems are overcome quickly, there shouldn’t be anything that we cannot handle. Additionally, frequent site visits will be made to check the progress of works and to see if any of the workforce need any additional materials. It is very important that we stay ahead of the guys so that they have a smooth run throughout the job. I am looking forward to the challenge of the summer works and can’t wait to get started.
