Environmental Policy

INTRODUCTION

Waller Associates Limited is committed to high standards of environmental care and continuously seeks to improve the methods of operation to reduce the total impact of its construction activities on the environment.

To achieve these aims it is recognised that we all have a significant role to play in minimising environmental damage. Employee failure to comply with the environmental policy may initiate the appropriate action against them in accordance with the Discipline and Grievance policy and procedures.

GENERAL POLICY STATEMENT

We believe a ‘substainable community’ is one which is vibrant, healthy and safe, which values the local and global environment where individuals and enterprises prosper. We strive to become more aware of the environment and the environmental impact of our business on a local and global scale. We are committed to following good environmental practices, where relevant to our activities.

Every effort is made to comply with current environmental best practice which includes the following:

• Paying particular attention to all relevant legislation, regulations and government guidance
• Meeting industry codes of practice wherever possible
• Reduce, re-use and recycling of all building materials and wastage wherever possible
• Using recycled products, such as stationery and paper products in the office environment
• Supply and fit of uPVC windows made from reconstituted plastics
• Making efficient use of natural resources by minimising waste and conserving energy and water
• Storing materials safely and securely to minimise loss or damage and preventing or limiting environmental accidents
• Seeking to use the most environmentally efficient means of transport
• Using registered waste disposal companies for the disposal of waste materials, including hazardous waste
• Keeping sites clean and tidy to ensure minimum disturbance and disruption to clients and their neighbours
• Ensuring that all employees, subcontractors and suppliers know and understand the policy and what is expected of them.

PROCEDURE 

Waller Associates Limited aims to improve our environmental performance by implementing the following:

Planning and Design Processes

• Ensuring that environmental considerations are incorporated into the planning and design process
• Advising clients on the impact of their choices on the environment
• Evaluating projects for fitness for purpose and value for money
• Use of site waste plans 

Construction

• Compliance with legislation and where possible exceeding minimum requirements
• Facilitating high standards of health, safety and welfare on site
• Aiming for high levels of workmanship to eliminate waste by achieving a policy of getting things right, first time 

Use of Resources

• Utilising materials which are not detrimental to the health of workers or occupants
• Dealing with suppliers, clients and customers with similar values
• Promoting the efficient use of transport in all our activities
• Retrieval of materials from site which are separated into different skips, e.g. metal, wood, hardcore etc. and retaining wood in stores where they can be prepared and re-used for future work

• Working in partnership with the local community, i.e. a partnership has been formed with a local college whereby they can collect and re-use any old materials from sites for training purposes.
• Annual servicing and refilling of fire extinguishers instead of disposal.

Monitoring of Policy

• Adherence to policy and achievement of objectives will be reviewed on a regular basis
• Legislative and industry code of proactive changes will be incorporated where applicable
• Annual analysis of waste disposal costs as a ratio of turnover will be undertaken in order to identify trends and additional improvement areas
